Upper Deck began releasing pack-out images of its flagship high-end product, Exquisite, this evening. I know the price point and NCAA license will turn off a few collectors, but I LOVE COLLEGE FOOTBALL. In fact, I love college football cards so much that even though the RGIII card below is an abomination to me (featuring a “Bear” logo that must have come from a novelty children’s jersey) I STILL want to bust this product. Whether I can afford it is an entirely different story, but as a college football fanatic I can’t resist the urge to bust a box that has Russell Wilson, Robert Griffin III, Trent Richardson, Doug Martin, and LaMichael James in their college jerseys.
Aesthetically, I think they could have started their gradient a little further down on the player (show a little more of the athlete) but other than that I love it, as I usually do with Exquisite. Once again, Andrew Luck won’t be present (at least not in an obvious or immediate way) in this product thanks to Press Pass’ stupid exclusive license, which, I remind you, does nothing more than hurt collectors. But that won’t keep collectors from busting down the doors to chase the industry’s most coveted logo-patch 1/1s.
Will the lack of Luck cost Exquisite some sales? Or will the high-end-hype that surrounds this brand overshadow his absence? We will know for sure on June 25th, when boxes hit hobby-shop shelves. For now, enjoy the show below and follow @UpperDeckSports on Twitter for the latest updates.
