2022 Topps Heritage Baseball Variations Guide
The 2022 Topps Heritage Baseball variations lineup is big. Not only are there lots on the checklist, but they come in several different styles. Some jump out at you while others blend right in. But even if you don’t want to take the time to hunt for them, there’s a simple way to spot them — that doesn’t require looking at codes.
All told, 2022 Topps Heritage Baseball has six different types of variations totalling more than 90 cards. While there’s a bit of a twist, there’s nothing completely new this year.
The Different Types of 2022 Topps Heritage Baseball Variations
Image Variations
In the past, the formal name for these has been Action Image Variations. But with 1973 Topps Baseball including more than just player portraits, so does the 2022 Topps Heritage base set. That means these might not jump out quite as easily as before.
Photos on these have been switches out, often for something more dynamic and eye-catching.

Throwback Variations
This is another set of photo variations. However, there’s a theme. Players are dressed in commemorative uniforms.
Historically, these are some of the most popular and valuable cards in Topps Heritage Baseball each year. While the cards themselves often look good, it’s the extreme rarity that brings prices up as master set and player collectors vie for the few copies that are out there.
Error Variations
Going from cards where there differences are easy to spot to ones that are extremely tough, Error Variations aren’t really errors. The mistakes are intentional. Spelling mistakes, statistical mix-ups, reverse images are just some of the things that have been used in the past.
Nickname Variations
These are self-explanatory. The player’s name has been replaced by their nickname.
Team and Name Color Swap/Player Icon Color Swap
Although these are two different types of 2022 Topps Heritage Baseball Variations, the approaches are identical. For Team and Name Color Swaps, these shades have been switches. With Player Icon Variations, the circle and the silhouetted icon have their colors switched around.
How Tough Are the 2022 Topps Heritage Baseball Variations?
Not all 2022 Topps Heritage variations are distributed equally. Image Variations are on the easier side, landing less than 1:3 hobby boxes. On there other end of the spectrum are Throwback Uniform Variations, which are about 1:937 hobby boxes.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the hobby pack odds:
- Image – 1:64
- Team and Name Color Swap – 1:382
- Error – 1:9,506
- Nickname – 1:4,753
- Throwback – 1:22,487
- Player Icon Color Swap – 1:3,961
2022 Topps Heritage Baseball Variations — No Codes Necessary
Over the years, a lot of collectors have taken to using the codes in the fine print on the back to check for Topps variations. It’s small and often hard to read.
Heritage goes another route that’s a lot easier and more obvious. It still requires a glance on the back. Only here, it’s a clear label next to the card number.

So if you’re not 100% sure by the front or you’re sorting a large stack into sets, it’s an easy way to know not only that you’ve got a variation but what kind it is.
It’s worth noting that both the Team and Name Color Swap and Player Icon Color Swap Variations have the same “COLOR” label on the back. For these, it might require a closer look on the front to see what has been changed.

“Kike” Hernandez, not “Kiki”. Thanks for the helpful article!
Horrible quality control. I opened an entire case, and all 2,248 base cards have bad edges and corners on the back. No such thing as a mint card in the lot. I will not be returning for more.
ryan-for the 2022 heritage baseball release,i’ve seen all of the different types of variations that are listed here on beckett.i have come across easily 2 dozen cards with the card #s and the player names and info on the back of the card totally different from the player on the front of the card….for ex,i have a mookie betts front of the card with josh hader’s info and card #327 on the back of the same card.i don’t see any kind of info that relates to this kind of difference listed anywhere.do you have any info on this kind of error/???.
@Paul – They’re printing errors.
ryan-are there any value to the printing error cards…rcs, stars or common ones…and where would one look for pricing,if any,on them?
@Paul – It’s tough to say as it’s very niche appeal. This article might help explain: https://www.beckett.com/news/sports-card-printing-errors/
Hey Ryan, I can’t find any article that refers to Flip stock. What is Flip stock? How do you tell on the card that it’s a flip stock? And some Juan Soto cards are advertised on eBay as out of five and Flip stock, but there’s no markings or anything on the card. Very confusing trying to tell the difference? Any ideas or links that clearly explain what flip stock is?
@Dave – It’s essentially the sheet was flipped before the cards were printing. So Flip Stock front has the same feel as a base back (slightly rougher). Flip Stock backs are smooth like base front.
Ryan, I have a card #1 (active home run leaders) numbered 38/73 but written in French on the back…
How many are written in other languages on the back?
It’s a French parallel. They’re listed on the checklist here: https://www.beckett.com/news/2022-topps-heritage-baseball-cards/
Ryan,
I believe to have a Flip Stock Shohei #150. Has none of the variations listed but the biggest difference is the coloring on the back boxes. Instead of the dark yellow/brown boxes it has a brighter lighter yellow color. Can you verify this ?
I can’t tell without actually touching the card.
Why are card #400-500 considered short prints?
There are less of them compared to other base cards.
There are also black and white variations
They’re listed on the High Number checklist: https://www.beckett.com/news/2022-topps-heritage-high-number-baseball-cards/
I pulled willie mays #23. Short print code ending in 958. I see no comps, nothing about short print code ending in 958 listed on any site. Can someone help me out and tell me what I pulled?
