Cheap Wax Wednesday Box Breaks: 2013 Onyx Platinum Prospects Series 2 Baseball
2013 Onyx Platinum Prospects was released in two series. The problem is, the checklist is funky, and there isn’t a good way to tell where Series 1 ends and Series 2 begins. There are even two different numbering formats. Some cards are numbered, while some use lettering instead. Some players even have multiple cards in the checklist.

The good: There is an autograph in every pack. Every card is numbered. Even the base cards are limited to just 300 copies.
The bad: Looking back a decade later, the checklist isn’t very strong. That’s baseball. Not all high draft picks pan out, that is just the way it goes.
There are some notable names on the overall checklist, though, including Orlando Arcia, Byron Buxton, Rougned Odor, Jorge Polanco, Gary Sanchez and Christian Yelich.

Pack 1:
Orlando Arcia (003/300), Melvin Mercedes (149/300) & Josh Hart Autograph (084/175)
Josh Hart was a first round selection of the Orioles in 2013. He never made it above High-A in the minor leagues.

Pack 2:
Matt Shoemaker (267/300), Jose Peraza (244/300) & Josmil Pinto Autograph
Looks like there was some kind of mix up with the Pinto. The card back doesn’t even mention it being an autograph card.

Pack 3:
Aaron Slegers (246/300), Jason Hursh (002/300) & Jonathan Crawford Autograph (085/175)
They spelled Jonathon’s name wrong here. Oops. Crawford was selected 20th overall by the Tigers in 2013. He also never progressed above High-A. He currently plays in the independent Atlantic League for the Charleston Dirty Birds.

Pack 4:
Alfredo Morales (272/300), Josh Hart (166/300) & Dietrich Enns Autograph (064/175)
Enns has pitched in the majors for two different teams. Back in 2017 he threw in just two games for the Twins. In 2021, though, he pitched in nine games for the Rays, posting a 2.82 ERA.

Pack 5:
Hua-Wei Lo (057/300), Hunter Harvey (245/300) & Hunter Harvey Autograph (086/175)
Harvey was selected 22nd overall by the Orioles in the 2013 draft. So far, he has pitched in 96 major league games. He currently pitches out of the Nationals bullpen and has a 3.55 ERA this season.

Pack 6:
James Gillheeney (162/300), Breyvic Valera (115/300) & Tyler Heineman Autograph (083/175)
Heineman has played in just 94 major league games. He is currently on the Blue Jays major league roster. So far he has appeared in nine games this season.

Lastly, the card backs from the last pack. There isn’t a ton of info on the backs. The QR code used to show some player info, but now just brings you to the Onyx website.

So I did find some first round picks, but nobody that turned into a star. I missed out on the biggest names on the checklist. While they are there, they are tough to find with just six packs per box. The good news is that boxes can still be found for under $30, so it won’t cost much to make a run at it.
