Retro Rainbows: 1997 Finest Baseball Parallel Guide
Topps rejuvenated its Finest brand in 1996 by creating a tiered checklist with increasingly rare Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels to the base set. A year later, the tiers returned, the base cards went borderless, and the 1997 Finest Baseball parallel cards became one of the most popular parallel rainbows of the decade.
Topps has again brought back a tiered Finest base set for a second straight year in 2025, so let’s take a look back at the 1997 Finest Baseball parallels in the inaugural edition of Beckett’s Retro Rainbows.

1997 Finest Baseball Checklist Overview
Topps released the 1997 Finest Baseball set in two series, with each including 100 Bronze cards, 50 Silver cards (1:4 hobby packs), and 25 Gold cards (1:24). Cards were also broken into various subsets spread throughout each tier, three of which repeated in both series.
In Series 1, subsets included:
- Finest Blue Chips
- Finest Hurlers
- Finest Warriors
- Finest Power
- Finest Masters
In Series 2, subsets included:
- Finest Blue Chips
- Finest Acquisitions
- Finest Competitors
- Finest Power
- Finest Masters
There are only four rookie cards in the set: Brian Giles (Bronze) and Bubba Trammell (Bronze) in Series 1, and Hideki Irabu (Silver) and Jose Cruz Jr. (Gold) in Series 2.

1997 Finest Baseball Parallels
Topps produced traditional Refractors for every Bronze, Silver, and Gold card in the 1997 Finest base set, but the company expanded the parallel chase for Silver and Gold cards to include Embossed versions and Embossed Refractors. That change left top players like Ken Griffey Jr. with three base cards and seven parallels – a fairly high number for the era but miniscule compared to the 51 cards players like Shohei Ohtani have in the 2025 Finest set (three base and 16 parallels for each tier).
Bronze Refractors
Collectors found an average of two 1997 Finest Bronze Refractors per hobby box, as the cards landed 1:12 packs. And just because these were the easiest to find does not mean that Topps did not put star power onto the Bronze checklist. Hall of Famers in Series 1 include Derek Jeter, Frank Thomas, and Rickey Henderson, while Bronze Hall of Famers in Series 2 include Ken Griffey Jr., Cal Ripken Jr., and Chipper Jones.

Silver Refractors
With pack odds of 1:48, collectors typically found a Silver Refractor card in every other box. Naturally, the Silver segment of the checklist has a lot of star power. Series 1 standouts include Griffey, Ripken, Jones, and Mariano Rivera, while Series 2 features the likes of Jeter, Thomas, Greg Maddux, Tony Gwynn, and Barry Bonds.

Gold Refractors
With the toughest pack odds among 1997 Finest base Refractors (1:288 packs or once per hobby case), the Gold Refractors feature some of the top names of the era. Jeter, Thomas, Gwynn, Maddux, and Bonds highlight Series 1, and Griffey, Ripken, Jones, and Hideo Nomo lead the Series 2 checklist.

Silver Embossed
Hobby boxes typically yield at least one Silver Embossed card, which fall 1:16 packs (or 18 per 12-box case). These cards did not have the protective film that covered base cards and base Refractors because it would not have stuck to the raised image Topps imprinted of each player.

Gold Embossed
While the embossment was enough to discern these cards from base versions, the Gold Embossed cards got even more special treatment. Found once every 96 packs, these tough finds could be seen as soon as a collector fanned out the cards from the pack because they have deckled die-cutting along the edges.

Silver Embossed Refractors
Found once every 192 packs, Silver Embossed Refractors were a treat for collectors to find. Topps replaced the traditional rainbow Refractor finish with the shimmering, diamond-shaped Refractor pattern first found on 1996 Bowman’s Best Atomic Refractors. When paired with the Silver colors of these cards, the final result resembles actual diamonds.

Gold Embossed Refractors
Gold Embossed Refractors showed up once every fourth hobby case, with incredibly tough odds of 1:1,152 packs. But if you pulled one, you knew immediately that you had something special. In addition to the embossment and deckled edge of an Embossed Gold base card, the Refractor versions feature a checkerboard Refractor pattern that twinkles in the light and pops off both the front and back of the card.
