Something a little different this week. While not traditional cards, 1991 Topps Stand-Ups Baseball is in packs and feature players. So it still counts, right?

In case some don’t already know, Topps was founded as a confectionary company. They produced candy. With 1991 Topps Stand-Ups they attempted to create a mash-up product featuring both cards and candy. More so than just including a stick of gum in packs of cards. The candy inside is kind of like candy necklace candy. And no, I did not try it.

The checklist features 36 players. National League players appeared on green plastic dispensers, while American Leaguers were on red dispensers. There is also supposedly a fairly rare clear dispenser variation. Imagine that? Parallels even in candy dispensers.

Pack 1:

Matt Williams

Williams was just coming off of his first All-Star appearance in 1990. He ended up leading the league with 122 RBI.

Pack 2:

Frank Viola

Pack 3:

Robin Yount

Pack 4:

Ozzie Smith

Pack 5:

Darryl Strawberry

Would you look at that? A clear variation! I would be interested to see how rare these actually are. I might have to do some research.

Pack 6:

Dave Stewart

Pack 7:

Ryne Sandberg

Pack 8:

Nolan Ryan

Pack 9:

Mark McGwire

1991 was a down year for Big Mac, hitting only .201. He did still manage to make the All-Star Team, for the fifth straight season at that point.

Pack 10:

Ben McDonald

Does McDonald seem like an odd choice? Looking at it now, yes. But, in 1990 he posted a 2.43 ERA as a 22-year-old starting pitcher.

Pack 11:

Kevin Mitchell

Pack 12:

Cal Ripken

Pack 13:

Ramon Martinez

Though he would get overshadowed by his brother, Pedro, Ramon Martinez was a strong pitcher as well. He finished second in the NL Cy Young voting following the 1990 season after going 20-6 with a 2.92 ERA.

Pack 14:

Don Mattingly

Pack 15:

Bo Jackson

Pack 16:

Rickey Henderson

Pack 17:

Kevin Maas

Remember how Maas was going to be the next big superstar?

Pack 18:

Dave Justice

Pack 19:

Mark Grace

Pack 20:

Ken Griffey Jr.

Classic young Griffey shot on a candy dispenser. This absolutely belongs on a shelf somewhere.

Pack 21:

Tony Gwynn

Pack 22:

Doc Gooden

Pack 23:

Cecil Fielder

Pack 24:

Carlton Fisk

As a Red Sox fan, I can never get over Fisk in a White Sox uniform.

Pack 25:

Jose Canseco

Pack 26:

Will Clark

Pack 27:

Roger Clemens

Finally! A color match dispenser!

Pack 28:

Len Dykstra

Pack 29:

Eric Davis

Pack 30:

Andre Dawson

Pack 31:

Wade Boggs

Pack 32:

Jim Abbott

Abbott finished third in the AL Cy Young voting following the 1991 season. He went 18-11 with a 2.89 ERA.

Pack 33:

Sandy Alomar

Pack 34:

George Brett

Pack 35:

Bobby Bonilla

Pack 36:

Barry Bonds

Lastly, the Rickey dispenser back. Pretty plain, but you’ll probably recognize the Topps 40 Years logo that is also on every 1991 Topps Baseball card. I also appreciate each player’s Rookie Card info.

It appears that maybe each box contains a full 36-dispenser set? At least I did. These are fun. A few of them will even end up displayed on a shelf mixed in with all my other sports memorabilia.
