If you’re looking to complete a Fred McGriff Rookie Card run, it’s not a hard task. The Hall of Famer has just two RCs, both affordable and neither terribly difficult to track down. Those looking for more of an early challenge can dig into McGriff’s minor league cards or top-condition graded cards.

While always well respected both as a player and in collecting circles, McGriff has never been a major star in the hobby. It parallels his consistent approach at the plate — always good but rarely in the spotlight in a crowd of flashier players.

Fred McGriff Rookie Card Guide

1986 Donruss Fred McGriff Rookie Card #28

For decades, it was Jose Canseco that was the star in 1986 Donruss Baseball. As far as hobby iconography, he still is. But Canseco has some added company now. With Fleer and Topps not making their first cards of the first baseman until the following year, Donruss was the only one of the “Big 3” manufacturers to feature him in 1986. McGriff now has the distinction of being the first Rated Rookie elected to Cooperstown.

1986 Leaf/Donruss Fred McGriff Rookie Card #28

The only other Fred McGriff Rookie Card is like a case of déja vu. Virtually identical to his Donruss RC, this one comes from Leaf. It’s a situation similar to Topps and O-Pee-Chee at the time. While Donruss cards were made for American collectors, Canadians got Leaf. Outside of the brand name on the front, the bilingual English-French text on the back is the most noticeable difference. The Leaf card is the rarer of McGriff’s Rookie Cards, but prices of the two are comparable.

Fred McGriff Minor League Card Highlights

Here’s a breakdown of Fred McGriff minor league cards released through 1986, the same year as his Rookie Cards.

1985 Syracuse Chiefs TCMA Fred McGriff #2

The first Fred McGriff card is part of TCMA’s 1985 Syracuse Chiefs team set. Like virtually all 1980s minor league cards, the design is on the simple side and not overly attractive. But it does have a young smiling Crime Dog evoking some of the quiet warmth that would stay with him throughout his career (it’s only a joke about his first day as a Brave if you want it to be). It’s believed that 3,000 of the Chiefs sets were produced by TCMA in 1985. So while not scarce, it’s available today in somewhat limited numbers.

1985 Syracuse Chiefs TCMA Fred McGriff/Dale Holman #25

McGriff appears on a second card in the 1985 Syracuse Chiefs TCMA set, this time with International League teammate Dave Holman. While McGriff went on to be one of MLB’s top hitters for more than a decade, Holman would never get past Triple-A. Although part of the same set are McGriff’s main 1985 minor league card and with the same print run, this one seems to pop up less frequently.

1985 Dominican League Stickers Fred McGriff #149

When it comes to early Fred McGriff cards and related collectibles, this is a unicorn that rarely surfaces. There are actually still a lot of unknowns about the 1985 Dominican League Stickers set, but McGriff’s inclusion is a part of it.

1986 Stars of the Future TCMA Fred McGriff #26

Not a traditional baseball card, the 1986 Stars of the Future TCMA Fred McGriff doubles as a postcard. It’s not just the larger size, but the back design as well. This ranks among McGriff’s tougher minor league releases.

1986 Syracuse Chiefs ProCards Fred McGriff

Much like a second-year card of a major leaguer, this card doesn’t have quite the same prestige as McGriff’s 1985 TCMA release. Still, it comes from the same years as his MLB Rookie Cards and it’s not nearly as abundant.
