2015-16 Panini Gala Basketball is a sequel release for a high-end brand that takes its inspiration from the world of cinema. Is it more Empire Strikes Back, Son of the Mask or somewhere in between? That depends on the collector. But there isn’t quite the same shroud of secrecy surrounding a basketball card release as there is with a movie. The general premise is focused on hits.

2015-16 Panini Gala Basketball Rookies

Boxes have five cards, four of which are autographs or memorabilia cards. One of the hallmarks of the original returns with some of the rarest rookie cards in the history of the hobby.

All autographs and memorabilia cards top out at 60 copies each. Many have much smaller print runs. Cinematic Signatures are back with a focus on blending autographs with striking wide-angle action images. Sticking with the movie theme are Genregraphs. The pictures on these cards are intended to evoke different feelings and emotions like you’d expect in a Hollywood thriller, drama or comedy.

Headliners is one of the toughest autograph inserts in 2015-16 Panini Gala Basketball. For starters, the checklist is limited to ten big-name players. Each of the cards is numbered to 8 for a total of 80 cards across the entire product run. Basically, they’re comparable to the number of empty seats on opening night for Star Wars: The Force Awakens last winter so pulling one is quite the feat.

Primetime Memorabilia and Coming Attractions are among the product’s jersey hits.

Base cards fall one per pack. If that didn’t make things hard enough to build a full run, the rookie cards confirm. A total of 25 first-year players are featured. Not too tough, right? Wrong. They’re limited to just eight copies each, making them some of the toughest rookie cards in the history of the hobby.

PUN ALERT … Sounds like this limited release will prevent it from achieving huge box office numbers! The designs are nice, but I probably won’t ever see these in the store I go to.
