As soon as any professional Japanese player puts ink to a Major League Baseball contract, collectors perk up at the chance to collect a new superstar, and that was no different in 2024 when they started wondering when the first Yoshinobu Yamamoto rookie cards would hit packs.

Yamamoto was highly coveted when he declared he wanted to come to America after winning three straight Sawamura Awards (the Japanese version of the Cy Young) and three straight Pacific League MVP honors. Team after team rolled out the red carpet to lure him to their city, but it was the Los Angeles Dodgers who won his services with a 12-year, $325 million contract — the largest ever given to a Japanese pitcher.

“We really believed in his ability to pitch at the major-league level and believed in his stuff,” said Dodgers vice-president of player personnel Galen Carr, who personally scouted Yamamoto in Japan. “That was reflected in the contract we gave him. … If anyone else has any questions about why we gave this guy the contract that we did before pitching in the big leagues, I think he probably has answered those questions by now.”

In the 2025 MLB postseason, Yamamoto became the first pitcher since 2001 to fire back-to-back complete games in the playoffs — the first in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series and the second in Game 2 of the World Series. Then, he won Game 6 and earned the victory in relief a day later in Game 7 to win World Series MVP honors as the Dodgers took down the Toronto Blue Jays.

From the Dodgers’ perspective, performances like that don’t really have a price tag. From a collecting perspective, they can make a player already on the map stick out even more. As one of many crown-jewel prospects with rookie cards in 2024 baseball card sets, Yamamoto’s first-year issues stepped up in popularity throughout his star-studded 2025 campaign as collectors got a greater sense of just how good Yamamoto could be.

This guide gives you insight and images of all of Yamamoto’s rookie cards listed in the Beckett database, plus a couple of bonus picks — including a look at his Japanese rookie card.

A Collector’s Guide to Yoshinobu Yamamoto Rookie Cards

2024 Bowman #36

Because Yamamoto came from Japan, he never had a formal “1st Bowman” prospects card, so his 2024 Bowman rookie doubles as his first Bowman card, albeit without the formal declaration. The card comes in more than a dozen parallel colors, and has a Mega Box version.

2024 Bowman Chrome #74

The Chrome upgrade to Yamamoto’s Bowman rookie features a different photo, but the photo fun doesn’t stop there. Yamamoto’s rookie also has a photo variation, and he appears as part of the 1999 25th Anniversary checklist. That retro insert gives him a card stylized like a set that released when he was a 1-year-old. In addition to a dozen Bowman Chrome parallels, this card also has Mega Box and Sapphire versions.

2024 Finest #50

Yamamoto appears in all three tiers, with his official RC designation going to his common card (#54). Each tier has a different photo and its own set of 14 parallels.

2024 Topps Chrome #18

Another must-have rookie among player collectors is the Topps Chrome version. Buoyed by dozens of shiny Refractor parallels, any player’s Topps Chrome rookie gets plenty of attention — as do set variations such as Logofractor and Sapphire. Topps even made this card #18 in the set, helping capture the excitement of Yamamoto’s arrival to Major League Baseball by matching his jersey number.

2024 Topps Chrome Black #18

Another Chrome card checking in at #18 on the checklist is Yamamoto’s Topps Chrome Black issue. 2024 Topps Chrome Update #USC108

A breakout star as a rookie, it only made sense that Topps would give Yamamoto some attention in the Topps Chrome Update Series, issuing a “Rookie Debut.” The bigger chase than any of the dozens of Refractor parallels or his image variation, however, is Yamamoto’s 1/1 Rookie Debut Patch Autograph card. There is no public indication that card has ever surfaced.

2024 Topps Holiday #H88

Yamamoto’s Topps rookie card gets a festive makeover in the annual Topps Holiday series. Topps leaned into the “neon lights” theme that started with the flagship base cards, placing “lit-up” graphics of holiday items and characters throughout the background. The card has 12 parallels and an image variation that gives Yamamoto a necklace of holiday light bulbs.

2024 Topps Inception #44

As one of the latest 2024 releases, Yamamoto’s Topps Inception rookie is the last base rookie card his collectors could chase — and one with a photo unlike the others. With nine parallels, Yamamoto has a thrilling rainbow and plenty of non-rookie autographs and relic cards to chase from the set.

The card is elegantly designed, with foil accents in two of the corners and around a player’s photo. That foil can come in eight different colors, including a striking Blue that makes for a color match in Yamamoto’s case.

What is Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s Japanese Rookie Card?

Yamamoto went professional in Japan at age 18 and has several Japanese-issued cards from his seven years with the Orix Buffaloes in Nippon Professional Baseball, including several from Bowman and Topps NPB sets. But his first card hails from the 2017 BBM set. Baseball Card Magazine began producing Japanese cards in 1991 and most notable Japanese players have a coveted BBM issue in their card catalog.
