1999 Pacific Private Stock Baseball marked the brand’s debut. It has base cards on thicker card stock than other releases. The 150-card checklist is the same size as two other Pacific products from the year, 1999 Prism and Invincible.

One thing Private Stock does not have much of is inserts. While there are the PS-206 mini parallels and four serial numbered parallels to chase down, the set really only has one insert set, Home Run History. These focus mostly on the 1998 home run race between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa. It’s kind of strange for a ’90s Pacific release to not have a bunch of good looking inserts.

Pack 1 highlights:

Chan Ho Park, Otis Nixon, Mo Vaughn & Rondell White PS-206 (one per pack)

Check out that face mask on the Nixon card! It reminds me of playing baseball as a kid.

Pack 2:

Wally Joyner, Tony Clark, John Olerud, Ben Grieve & Jim Thome PS-206

Pack 3:

Ivan Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez & Rod Beck PS-206

Pack 4:

Gary Sheffield, Curt Schilling, Roger Clemens, Kenny Lofton, Dean Palmer PS-206 & Mark McGwire Home Run History (2:25 packs)

Palmer made his lone All-Star appearance in 1998, finishing the season with 34 home runs and a career-high 119 RBI.

Pack 5:

Brian Jordan, Mo Vaughn, Ryan Klesko & David Cone PS-206

Pack 6:

Andres Galarraga, Randy Johnson, Kerry Wood & Bob Higginson PS-206 Red Back (1:25 packs)

The Big Unit pitched in just 11 games for Houston following a trade deadline deal. The Mariners received Freddy Garcia, Carlos Guillen and John Halama in return for the ace lefty. How did Johnson do for the Astros? He went 10-1 with a 1.28 ERA.

Pack 7:

Matt Williams, Jose Canseco, Raul Mondesi, Carlos Guillen RC & Jose Cruz, Jr. PS-206

Pack 8:

Trevor Hoffman, Cal Ripken, Jr., Derek Jeter & Eric Chavez PS-206

Pack 9:

Scott Rolen, Jim Thome & Matt Stairs PS-206

Pack 10:

Cal Ripken, Jr., Derek Jeter, Edgar Martinez, Mike Piazza & Piazza PS-206

A nice side-by-side comparison of the base cards and PS-206. 206’s are just shrunk down with an added white border.

Pack 11:

Omar Vizquel, Will Clark, Mo Vaughn & Mark Loretta PS-206

Pack 12:

Mike Mussina, Will Clark, Paul O’Neill & Fred McGriff PS-206 Red Back (1:25 packs)

Pack 13:

Tino Martinez, Bill Mueller, Barry Bonds & Ryan Minor PS-206

Mueller never did get selected to an All-Star team, but he did finish 12th in AL MVP voting following the 2003 season in which he led the AL with a .326 average.

Pack 14:

Tino Martinez, Frank Thomas, Kenny Lofton, Hideo Nomo & Nomar Garciaparra PS-206

Pack 15:

Chipper Jones, Richie Sexson & Devon White PS-206

Pack 16:

Brian Jordan, Moises Alou & Darin Erstad PS-206

Brian Jordan, the forgotten two-sport athlete. Will we ever see another?

Pack 17:

Mike Mussina, Barry Bonds & John Smoltz PS-206

Pack 18:

Manny Ramirez, Chipper Jones & Dante Bichette PS-206

Pack 19:

Vinny Castilla, Ivan Rodriguez, Chipper Jones PS-206 & Sosa/McGwire Home Run History (2:25 packs)

McGwire, of course, edged out Sosa 70 home runs to 66 in 1998.

Pack 20:

David Wells, Moises Alou & Dave Nilsson PS-206

Pack 21:

Vladimir Guerrero, Greg Vaughn & Scott Brosius PS-206

Pack 22:

Aramis Ramirez, Dante Bichette, Jeff Bagwell, Juan Gonzalez & Edgar Renteria PS-206

Underrated Aramis recently got the Topps Living Set treatment.

Pack 23:

Chipper Jones, Eric Chavez, Roberto Alomar, Andruw Jones & Manny Ramirez PS-206

Pack 24:

Greg Vaughn, Vinny Castilla & Roberto Alomar PS-206

Lastly, the Vaughn card back. It’s an odd choice to feature the box score from a single game.

Unfortunately, not a single numbered card in this box. Definitely outpaced the odds with three PS-206 Red Back cards, but missed on the serial-numbered parallels.

Next week, with the calendar flipping over to May, I will once again celebrate Minor League May and feature nothing but minor league products for the month.
