2023 Topps Chrome Baseball Variations Guide
The 2023 Topps Chrome Baseball variations checklist includes a mix of 20 veteran stars and rookie standouts. Of those, five first-year players also have tougher Super Short Print (SSP) Variations for a grand total of 25.
Like usual, variations look like standard 2023 Topps Chrome Baseball base cards — almost. They’re actually done as Refractors so there’s the added rainbow shine to the background when you hold them under light.
Either way, they’re on the sneaky side and can slip past if you’re not paying attention.
The big change is in the photo with variations offering alternate shots. Usually, these are more candid in their approach with players celebrating or hanging out and having fun around the ballpark.
Image Variations are on the tough side, landing 1:497 hobby packs, 1:221 jumbo packs and 1:861 blaster packs.
SP Image Variations also have five levels of parallels:
- Green Speckle – /99
- Gold Speckle – /50
- Orange Speckle – /25
- Red Speckle – 5
- Superfractors – 1/1
SSP Image Variations do not have additional versions. That shouldn’t matter too much because of how hard they are to pull: 1:16,938 hobby packs, 1:7377 jumbo packs and 1:29,256 blaster packs.
2023 Topps Chrome Baseball Variations Codes and How to Spot Them
Still uncertain whether you have an SP or SSP variation? Flip the card over. There are two quick ways to help confirm base cards from their tougher counterparts.
The first is the CMP code in the fine print at the bottom. Different card types have different code endings. These are the three you need for spotting variations:
- Base – 121
- Image Variations – 173
- SSP Image Variations – 181

There’s another tipoff, also on the reverse. Standard Refractors for base cards have a label on the back. Variations, which are also done on Refractor stock do not. So if you pull a Refractor that looks like a base card but doesn’t say “Refractor” under the team logo it probably means SP or SSP.

My first refractor was a yu darvish…didnt have the word refractor under the padres symbol…but its not an sp or ssp…so was that tipoff wrong?
Is it a standard Refractor or a different color/pattern? The standard Refractors all have the label like the one shown in the article. And I did double check on a Darvish as well in case some have it and some don’t.
I pulled a Eury Perez that looks like a black printing plate code is 7119. Any idea what it is?
